My name is Alex Sims and I am an MSc student at the University of Otago. I am lucky enough to be conducting research in one of the most stunning and inspiring environments in New Zealand; the Southern Alps. My research project is looking into groundwater movement in the Southern Alps, and in specifically in the rock that lies adjacent to and above the Alpine Fault. Most of my work is in and around the Tartare Tunnel, a 300m long tunnel about 1km eastwards of Franz Josef.
Rain and snow gauges are usually very scarce in mountain regions, so HD timelapse footage from SnapitHD cameras in the Fox Glacier area allows me to better establish when snow fell and how low it settled. An invaluable tool in my data collection. This research will contribute understanding to a variety of other projects, including the behaviour of the Alpine Fault and groundwater resources on the west coast of New Zealand.
